Philippine Top 25 Female Young Stars

At dahil Siete Contra Dos and ating tema, the Kapamilya prevailed in this round.

In this round, the Kapuso is the run-away winner dahil out of 50, 36 lahat ang galing sa Siete.

NEXT UPDATE: The final list of the 15% poll. This is the aggregate votes from Mister Poll, Poll Daddy Part 1 and Poll Daddy Part 2 na nagsara lang ngayong araw din na ito.

The weekly elimination for this batch actually started last April 6 and was supposed to be closed last April 13. The poll started late for about 3 hours and prematurely ended for 7 hours, thus, the 10-hour extension had been enforced.

Jonalyn Viray Leads 5th and Final Batch of GPTV Second Face-off

Now, it can be told. Jonalyn Viray is the leader of the final and last batch of our Second Elimination or Face-off of our search for the Goddess of Philippine TV.

**********

Filipino -Australian Jal Joshua is a Runner Up in Australia's Got Talent

As expected by us, our very own Jal Joshua Lebumfacil did not take the grand prize in Australia's Got Talent but he did make us proud by proving to everyone that the myth that all Filipinos can sing is true.

We wrote in this blog entry our opinion about his voice.

But it was Jal Joshua who gave the winner, Mark Vincent, a hard fight after all the other six finalists were eliminated. Jal and Mark were the last two acts.

We also salute how Jal handled the situation. He was really such a sport.

"You're really awesome. I hate opera but you're really good." This is what Jal told to Mark right after the winner's proclamation which drew admiration from the audience.

Mark performed an opera song by the late Luciano Pavarotti. His soulful rendition of Nessun Dorma is what influenced the viewers to choose him as the winner of a quarter of a million Australian dollars.
Jal sang Barry Manilow's One Voice. The performance was staged on the 15th of this month but the announcement of the winner was just last night only.

Jal received good words also from the judges of the show.

Dannii Minogue said, "The purity of your voice is so beautiful. I actually watched the show back again just to see you sing and if there was young talent time, you'll be on it so we could hear you singing every week."

Grant Denyer also said, "He continues to blow us ever since. There is no doubt we discovered an incredible young talent with a very broad future ahead. You are an unbelievable talent. Well done, an extra ordinary talent, a great discovery.

Well, to you Jal. You're such a nice kid and with proper trainings, I know you make it far in singing. Continue striving for the better.

Jonaly Viray Currently Tops Weekly Elimination of Goddess of Philippine TV

Hollywood Movies Filmed in the Philippines - Part 2

I enumerated 10 Hollywood movies that were filmed in the Philippines in this blog entry. I thought I can no longer add to the list since I was thinking that our country was never been treated as good film location by movie producers. But I was wrong since there are more to name.

1. Too Late the Hero - This is a 1970 Anglo-American War directed by Robert Aldrich. The main actors are Michael Caine, Henry Fonda, Cliff Robertson, Ken Takakura, Denholm Elliott, and Ian Bannen.

The famous Boracay Beach is where this movie was filmed. Of course, Boracay was not famous at that time yet.

2. DNA - This was released in 1997. Mark Dacascos is the leading actor. There are few Filipino actors in this film like Tom Taus, Susan Africa, Joel Torre, Kris Aguilar and Aniceto Fulminar. It was shot mostly in Laguna, Quezon and Cavite.

3. Kiss the Sky - An American movie released in October 1999. It starred by William L. Petersen, Gary Cole and Sheryl Lee. According to wikipedia, the plot follows two men on a business trip to the Philippines.

4. The Boys in Company C was yet another Vietnam war movie filmed in the Philippines, this time back in 1977. Directed by Sidney J. Furie, it's an action film about five young Marines and how their lives were changed by duty in the Vietnam war. Filipino actor Vic Diaz appeared as Colonel Trang.

5. Delta Force 2: The Colombian Connection is an action flick starring Chuck Norris, the Philippines became Colombia. Again the plot was simple -  good guys get kidnapped by lunatic. Delta Force comes to the rescue!

Some Filipino actors who appeared in the film are Dave Brodett, Rina Reyes, Subas Herrero, Ronnie Lazaro, Ruel Vernal, Roland Dantes, and Roldan Aquino.

6. I Come with the Rain - Josh Harnett has been in Diwalwal, Davao, Philippines for this unreleased film.

7. Black Mama, White Mama - Made in 1972 and starred by Pam Grier, this movie about prostitution was filmed in Manila.

8. The Great Raid – Starring Cesar Montano, Benjamin Pratt, Joseph Fiennes and Franco Nelson, scenes were shot in Cabanatuan City in 2005.

9. Back to Bataan -  This is a World War II movie which starred by John Wayne and Anthony Quinn. Quinns plays Captain Andres Bonifacio, the fictional grandson of Andres Bonifacio.

10. Real Glory - Believe it or not, this movie is very old. It was released in 1939. This movie is about the Philippine Constabulary.

12-year old Shaheen received a standing ovation from Simon Cowell

I always thought Simon Cowell is really very hard to please. In my years of watching him as a judge of singing competitions from United Kingdom to America, from X Factor to American Idol and back to Britain's Got Talent, I never saw him giving standing ovation to a performance by a contestant. But in the second week of audition of BGT in Cardiff, Wales, he did give it to a 12-year old boy named Shaheen Jafargholi.

Shaheen actually originally sang "Valerie" by Amy Whinehouse but was cut short by Simon 5 seconds into the song saying that it doesn’t work for him and asked him to sing something else.

The young boy then belted out Michael Jackson’s “Who’s Loving You” which elicited warm applause from the audience. Simon was definitely impressed as he and the other judges, Amanda holden and Piers Morgan gave him the standing ovation.

I really don't understand the mood of Simon. Personally, Shaheen is not the best singer I've seen in the show. Don't get me wrong there. He's good in his age but I've seen others who did better in their auditions but Simon never gave them the same act.

Well, Shaheen is definitely better than the first season runner-up, Connie Talbot but he is no better than the second season runner-up, Andrew Johnston.

Let's watch Shaheen's audition video.
Well, there is one good thing that happened to Shaheen with that performance. He was signed up by a local radio station and was given his own show. Yes, it's one-hour show on Swansea Bay Radio.

Filipino-Americans in Miss USA 2009

There are no big news in Philippine showbiz these days except the never-ending controversies the Gutierrez family is generating. This prompted me to deal on the subject of beauty pageants in this post, just temporarily. In case, you aren't aware, I am also keeping another blog about this subject which is even older than Siete Contra Dos.

To start with, last night, The Miss USA 2009 was concluded in Las Vegas, Nevada. The crown went to the beautiful representative of North Carolina, Kirsten Dalton. She will be representing USA in the Miss Universe pageant in the Bahamas comes August.

Our representative to the Miss Universe is Pamela Bianca Manalo.

But Dalton's victory was overshadowed by the controversy generated by the answer given by her runner up from California, Carrie Prejean, to the question from one of the judges. At the final Question and Answer portion, blogger Perez Hilton asked Prejean her opinion about legalizing same-sex or gay marriage to which she answered negatively. She was booed by the audience and obviously they did not agree nor respect the beauty queen's idea.

"We live in a land where you can choose same-sex marriage or opposite marriage," Prejean said. "And you know what, I think in my country, in my family, I think that I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman. No offence to anybody out there, but that's how I was raised."

A shouting match was reportedly occurred at the lobby of the pageant venue. This only shows, expressing your opinion could be dangerous. This is the same scenario which is taking place in our showbiz nowadays.

Going back to the topic, did you know that there were two Filipino-Americans who represented two different states in this pageant?  Miss Hawaii, Aureana Tseu,  and Miss Texas, Aileen Jan Valdehuesa Yap both have the Filipino roots.
Miss Hawaii 2009, Aureana Tseu in a Filipiniana costume.
Miss Texas 2009, Aileen Jan Valdehuesa Yap, with her sash.

Gee Ann Abraham Takes Top Position in this Week's Elimination of GPTV

After garnering a total votes of 25,360, Gee Ann Abraham emerged victoriously in this week's elimination of the Second Face-off of the Goddess of Philippine TV search after placing on top of the ranking. Abraham defied all odds as her fans worked day and night to contest her closest rival, another Kapamilya star, Angel Locsin who settled second in the ranking.

Locsin accumulated 22,161 votes, just 3,199 points away from Abraham's votes. Earlier before the elimination, Locsin was touted to be the leading force in this batch of 10 female young stars who fitted against each other on this week's race to Top 5.

Locsin and Abraham just qualified to take their slots in the Final Top 25 of our 100 Top Female Young Stars of the Philippines where the Goddess of Philippine TV will come from.

Interestingly, the two artists are the only Kapamilya talents in this batch. The other seven are all Kapuso talents. Both of them managed to stay on top for most of the days in their elimination week.

Joining them on Top 5 are Jennica Garcia, Maxene Magalona and Nadine Samonte. All ladies are now also part of the prestigious Final Top 25.

Garcia is the leader of the Kapuso artists in this batch after placing third with 9,462 votes. Magalona came in fourth with 9,433 votes. Samonte was lucky enough with her 9,425 votes to snatch fifth place.
All of them will be back on April 29 for another round of elimination. They will try their luck again as they will race to the Final Top 10.

The five female stars who didn't make the cut this week are Julia Clarete with 9,406 votes, Yasmin Kurdi with 8,187 votes, Nikki Leona Dacullo with 7,882 votes, Aicelle Santos with 1,451 and Carlene Aguilar who got 1,372 votes only.

They are now eliminated.

47-year old, Susan Boyle is going to win Britain's Got Talent 2009?

There is another video uploaded on youtube and dailymotion that is fast becoming phenomenal. Britain's Got Talent is creating a stir with the fantastic performance of a seemingly-nuisance singer who is aged 47. Eyes rolled in all corners when Susan Boyle entered the stage to perform her song, an act from a famous theater play, the Les Miserables.

When she mentioned her age and compared herself to Ellen Page, the audience started to laugh at her. She was referred to as a joke. Probably, in their minds, most of the audience were telling her to shut up and stop dreaming. Even the judges like Simon Cowell, look at her mockingly. They did not believe her.

But when Susan let the first tune out from her lips, the crowd went wild, not because Susan sang how they expected on her but they felt like an angel was singing in their noses. The unemployed, unassuming, cheery lady whose dream is to be a successful singer and perform in front of a large audience flawlessly rendered the song, "I Dreamed a Dream". She may not be as good as our very own Lea Salonga but her performance was incredible.

She got standing ovation and the audience were very much guilty for misjudging her earlier.
That was really amazing, huh.

So, are we witnessing another repeat of a history? Will Susan be as lucky as Paul?

Angel Locsin Now Leads Weekly Elimination of Goddess of Philippine TV

List of Hollywood Movies Shot in the Philippines

Last weekend, a lady friend and I were watching a Tom Cruise movie when we started arguing that the film was partially shot in the Philippines. The movie is "A Few Good Men" and what we love about it is the courtroom drama.

I knew Tom Cruise was in Ilocos Sur and Ilocos Norte. I've heard this when I was studying in college. I even remember an episode of Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho, showing Villa Angela in Vigan City where Tom Cruise stayed. They even showed the bed where he slept.

But I found out I was wrong about the movie. Though it's true Tom Cruise was in Vigan sometime in 1989, the movie he made there is "Born on the 4th of July".

Interestingly, I gathered from my research a list of Hollywood movies that were shot in our country. Here is the list.
1. Born on the 4th of July - This is a movie about a Vietnam war veteran. They wanted to shoot this in Vietnam but at that time, the relationship between this country and the US was not yet stabilized so the producer instead had it filmed in Ilocos Sur and Ilocos Norte.

Ilocos Norte was depicted as Vietnam while Vigan was depicted as Mexico.

2. Missing in Action - This is a 1984 Chuck Norris film about Vietnam war again. Laguna, Quezon and Cavite were used as locations.

3. The Year of Living Dangerously - Mel Gibson and Sigourney Weaver are the famous actors of this film. The story is about a love affair in Jakarta, Indonesia during the overthrow of President Sukarno.

As usual, Philippines was used again as Indonesia. While they were filming the movie, Mel Gibson and the other actor, Peter Weir, recieved many death threats from Filipino Muslims who believed the film was anti-Islam. The production was forced to move to Australia.

4. Platoon - This is another Vietnam war movie using Philippines as Vietnam in 1986. The lead actors are Charlie Sheen, Tom Berenger and Willem Dafoe. The shooting in the Philippines was almost canceled because at that time, the Ferdinand Marcos government wasn't stable. It was shot in Pagsanjan, Laguna, Quezon and Cavite.

5. Noriega: God's Favorite - This is a movie about a Panamanian ruler named Noriega. From that statement alone, one can conclude the Philippines is again used as Panama and South America this time. The lead actor is Bob Hoskins.

6. Thirteen Days - Making the Philippines as Cuba, Kevin Costner and Bruce Greenwood starred in this 2000 historical film. I think this movie was a flop because the budget was around 80M US dollars but the gross revenue was around 35 million US dollars only.

7. Apocalypse Now - This is a 1979 war movie by Francis Ford Coppola. It was shot in Baler, Quezon and Pagsanjan, Laguna. The filming and scouting of locations were done around 1974 up to 1977.

Cheap labor and the existing American military bases at that time are the primary reasons why the producer chose to film this in our country instead of Australia.

The actors are Martin Sheen, Marlon Brando, Harrison Ford, Robert Duvall, Albert Hall, Frederic Forrest, Sam Buttons and Laurence Fishburne.

8. Brokedown Palace - Who can't forget the controversy stirred by the actress of this film because of her comments about Manila? Claire Danes was declared persona non grata by Manila local government when she said in her interview with Vogue that "Manila is a ghastly weird city" in 1998 after the filming.

At the premiere of the film, she further remarked that the city (Manila) "smelled of cockroaches, with rats all over and that there is no sewage system and the people do not have anything-no arms, no legs, no eyes."

This movie shows a critical view of the Thai legal system so they were prevented to shot it in Thailand and had it instead in Manila. This is also a movie about friendship. I've watched this in the cinema and I did like it.

Aside from Danes, the other actors are Kate Beckinsale and Bill Pullman.

9. An Officer and a Gentleman - This time, the setting of the first part of the movie is the Philippines, in Subic Bay in particular. I haven't watch the movie yet but from the words of a friend, in fact, this movie is all about a Filipino-American boy who became a US Navy. It was played by Richard Gere.

According to Wikipedia, "the film begins with Zack Mayo (Richard Gere) receiving a graduation present from his father Byron (Robert Loggia), a brash, womanizing U.S. Navy Boatswain's Mate formerly stationed at Subic Bay in the Philippines. Mayo moved in with his father there in early adolescence when his mother committed suicide. Aloof and taciturn with repressed anger at his mother's suicide and his father's inability to properly parent him, Mayo surprises his father when he announces his aspiration to be a Navy pilot."

The other actors are Debra Winger, David Keith, Louis Gossett, Jr. and Robert Loggia.

10. Hamburger Hill - This is a 1987 Vietnam war film starred by Dylan McDermott, Steven Weber, Courtney B. Vance, Don Cheadle and Michael Boatman.

No other than .....Wilma Galvante.

Whodunit? Cops in a bind over shooting of Failon’s wife

The public is generating too much speculations why the wife of Ted Failon, ABS CBN news anchor, was shot. In a related development, I am copying and posting a news report from GMA news website that tells about an unidentified police who gave a statement that it was Ted who shot his wife inside their car and not in their house as reported earlier. If has been said that there's also a written apology letter from the wife. Know more about this. Please read.

**********
Quezon City homicide investigators on Wednesday night were digging deeper into the circumstances that led to the shooting of the wife of ABS-CBN TV Patrol news anchor Ted Failon after they received conflicting versions of the incident that occurred earlier in the day.

ABS-CBN TV Patrol’s Ron Gagalac on Wednesday night quoted a ranking police officer from the Quezon City Police District [QCPD] as saying that based on the investigators’ initial findings, it was Failon [Mario Teodoro Failon Etong ] who shot his wife Wednesday morning.

But Gagalac quickly cited another report by Superintendent Franklin Moises Mabanag, chief of the QCPD Criminal Investigation Detection Unit, that investigators are looking into the possibility that Failon’s wife tried to commit suicide.

Heated argument

The unidentified police officer reportedly said that Failon shot his wife Trina at the height of a heated argument inside the couple’s car. After the incident in Tandang Sora, Failon reportedly rushed Trina to the New Era General Hospital on Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon City.

The report said the hospital declined to disclose Trina’s condition. Gagalac quoted Dr. Salvador Corpuz, New Era medical director, as saying that Failon ordered the hospital not to give any information to the media about the incident.

The report said Trina’s relatives also declined to give any statement to the media, according to Corpuz.

Wife’s letter of apology

The report said Failon told Mabanag that Trina left their home in Tierra Pura Village in Tandang Sora, Quezon City Wednesday night after the couple had an argument. Trina reportedly left a letter to Failon wherein she said that she was sorry.

According to Gagalac, Mabanag said that when Failon reported for work in the morning for his program over radio dzMM, Trina returned home. When Failon went home, he reportedly saw his wife lying with a wound in her head inside the room of the couple’s daughter. That was when Failon reportedly rushed his wife to the hospital.

Failon, who is now being investigated by the police, and is reportedly taking a paraffin test at his Tierra Pura home, issued a statement saying that he rushed Trina to the hospital after he saw his bloodied wife lying on the bathroom floor.

In an official statement, Bong Osorio, head of ABS-CBN’s corporate communications department, appealed to media and others to respect Failon’s privacy.

“We appeal to everyone to please respect the privacy of Mr. Ted Failon and his family. His wife is fighting for her life," the statement read.

Cops grill Ted Failon on wife’s shooting

This is a report taken from the official website of Philippine Daily Inquirer. We decided to copy and paste the article here since the news is hot and fresh.

**********
Police are questioning television news anchor Ted Failon about a shooting incident on Wednesday that left his wife fighting for her life, an official said.

As of this posting, a team from the Scene of the Crime Operatives (SOCO) is taking Failon’s statement at his house on number 27, General Aquino Street, Tierra Pura subdivision in Quezon City’s Tandang Sora district early Wednesday evening, said Superintendent Franklin Mabanag, one of the lead investigators.

“Nandito sa bahay si Ted [Ted is inside the house],” Mabanag said.

Asked if Failon was considered as a suspect, Mabanag said: “Hindi pa [Not yet].”

Failon’s wife, Trinidad Etong, was shot in the head, allegedly inside their house on Wednesday.

The network, in a statement issued by Bong Osorio, head of corporate communications, confirmed that Failon’s wife is “fighting for her life.”

“We appeal to everyone to please respect the privacy of Ted and his family. His wife is fighting for her life,” said

The statement was released in reaction to reports that Failon, Ted Etong in real life, and his wife were involved in a shooting.

Earlier, Chief Superintendent Roberto Rosales, head of the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO), said they were looking for Failon to shed light on the incident.

"All we know is ang asawa ni Ted ay may tama sa ulo [the wife of Ted has a wound in the head]," Rosales told INQUIRER.net in a phone interview.

**********
PEP is one of the first news websites that reported this incident and in the report published in their site, it was stated that the wife was taken in an undisclosed hospital.

However, in the report of The Philippine Star (http://www.philstar.com/Article.aspx?articleId=457878&publicationSubCategoryId=200) the hospital is New Era.

Here is the complete report:

Ted Failon's wife shot, critically wounded

The wife of broadcast journalist Ted Failon was shot in the head by still unidentified suspects inside their house in Quezon City today.

Trinidad Etong, 45, was declared brain-dead by physicians at the New Era Hospital after sustaining a bullet wound in her right temple. The slug went through the side of her head, police said.

Police said the incident happened around 10: 30 a.m. inside their home in Tierra Pura Subdivision in Quezon City. The victim's sisters brought her to the hospital after hearing the gunfire, police added.

Investigators have yet to release an official statement and findings on the incident.

Meanwhile, Bong Osorio, ABS-CBN corporate communications head, issued the statement over dzMM, urging the privacy of Failon, a news anchor of the network giant.

"We appeal to everyone to please respect the privacy of Ted Failon and his family. His wife is fighting for her life," Osorio said.

**********
GMA news website just confirmed the incident while ABS CBN posted their request to the people to respect Ted's privacy.

Well, sana lang let bygones be bygones.

Afterall, business is business.

OA, as in over-acting, at over-kill daw masyadong itong si Richard, ayon sa isang kaibigan.

Iba naman ang pananaw ng isa naming nakausap, business is business still for the Gutierrez family daw.

Like mother, like son.

At bakit?

Business is business after the wedding.

"Dear fans,

Earlier today, in my hometown of Basle, surrounded by a small group of close friends and family, Mirka and I got married. It was a beautiful spring day and an incredibly joyous occasion.

Mr and Mrs Roger Federer wish all of you a happy Easter weekend."

So, we are asking the fans of Marian, Toni, Erich, Jennylyn, Jewel, Katrina, Ryza, Maja, Ehra and Iza to come back on 28 April 2009 from 7pm-5am Philippine time for an extension. Please relay this to all the fans.

Rachelle Ann Go - 19,985 + 452,650 + 75,648 = 548,283
Laarni Lozada - 19,158 + 412,108 + 67,855 = 499,121
Jewel Mische - 781 + 337,578 + 6,140 = 344,499
Marian Rivera -  11,790 + 241,811 + 63,608 = 317,209
Jennylyn Mercado - 57 + 110,834 + 1,966 = 112,857
Jonalyn Viray - 1,253 + 107,972 + 319 = 109,544
Toni Gonzaga - 217 + 94, 016 + 5,281 = 99,514
Jackie Rice - 71 + 89,650 + 1,316 = 91,037
Gee Ann Abraham - 7,111 + 60,504 + 21,966 = 89,581
Iza Calzado - 69 + 85,340 + 3,868 = 89,277
Aicelle Santos - 6,359 + 60,003 + 233 = 66,595
Lovi Poe - 66 + 63,155 + 1,305 = 64,526
Jennica Garcia - 59 + 62,330 + 527 = 62,916

Driver scam: Agency uses RTA name

Nearly 140 Filipinos – recruited to work as Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) bus drivers in Dubai – have become victims of a possible 20.5-million-peso (Dh2 million) swindle.

Without the promised jobs, some have been reduced to scavenging to eke out their next meal.

Many of the recruits said they came on a visit visa, arranged by CYM International Services, a job agency in Manila , which endorsed them to a local agency, Al Tomooh Technical Services, in Dubai . Al Tomooh declined to comment.

“It’s clear we’re not expected here,” said Reynaldo V. Salas, 35, a former bus driver of Baliuag Transit, wiping away his tears. He showed photocopies of cheques they signed to a bank and lending agency in Manila .

Some victims have already overstayed their visa period.

For each day that a tourist overstays a one-month visa in Dubai/UAE, he/she has to pay a fine of Dh200 (around 2,000 pesos) for the first day and Dh100 for each subsequent day.

The group that had arrived between January 29 and March 6, are currently staying in a flat near the Ajman garbage dump site.

Max Sumulong, 34, one of the victims, said last year CYM had offered him a job as a driver for Dh5,200 a month and he had given the agency 10,000 pesos (Dh1,000) as “processing fee”.

“The agency had asked each one of us to take out a 150,000-peso (Dh11,418) loan from a lending agency recommended by them and made us sign undated cheques worth 405,000 pesos (about Dh40,000) addressed to a bank and the lending agency, payable in 15 months,” he said.

Eliseo Maximo, who has worked for 11 years as a bus driver in Manila , said: “We’ve been collecting aluminium cans, selling them at Dh4 per kg in Ajman , just to have something to eat.”

Uncertain future

Arthur Hernandez, a bus driver for nine years, said: “I don’t know whom to believe anymore … An employee of Al Tomooh said hiring of bus drivers has been frozen. She said there are jobs open for taxi drivers. We’re told to go back to the Philippines . Nothing is clear.”

Virginia Calvez, Philippine Labour Attache and Head of Philippine Overseas Labour Office (Polo) in Dubai , said they were aware of the situation.

Calvez said they had requested the Manila government to stop processing drivers for RTA in 2008 after a similar case of illegal recruitment involving an agency had come to light. Carol Pestaño, a document specialist at CYM in Manila , said she didn’t know why the workers came on a visit visa.
